Sisal

Sisal rope is a natural rope made from the leaves of the Agave plant. Agave is a member of the Agave family with thick, fleshy, sword-shaped leaves that take years to mature.

The sisal plant is a tropical plant from which only the leaves are harvested. The first harvest occurs after about five years. A machine squeezes the leaves, separating the pulp and fibers. The sap of the plant can be used as a sweetener (agave syrup) or as a base for tequila. The fibers from the leaves are used to make rope and carpets. The fibers are combed and dried. Then the carding process begins, resulting in a ribbon that can be spun into thread.

Originating in Southeast Africa and Latin America, and specifically with the best crops in Madagascar, Tanzania, and Brazil, our sisal is carefully crafted from high-quality white yarn. The biggest threats to the harvest are drought, strikes, and war. If the agave plant doesn't get enough moisture, it doesn't grow properly, and fewer leaves can be harvested or the leaves are of lower quality.
