Polypropylene

Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer formed by the polymerization of propylene (a hydrocarbon). These granules are melted through extrusion, pressed through a sheet, and formed into filaments.

With multifilament, the mass is essentially forced through a fine showerhead, resulting in fine threads. With split film, a film is extruded. This film is then split or cut into strips, stretched, heated, fibrillated, and so on, resulting in a net structure.

The fibers are then processed into twisted or braided rope.

Properties

  • Synthetic rope, non-biodegradable
  • Strong and light rope
  • Rather stiff rope, not so flexible
  • Stay afloat

Technical specifications

  • 3- or 4-strand twisted or one-/two-/three- or four-strand packing twine
  • High breaking strength
  • Sensitive to wear
  • Moderate stretch
  • Does not absorb moisture, does not rot and floats (density 0.91 g/cm³)
  • Least UV resistant synthetic rope, loses strength after exposure to UV (unless stabilized, which is standard with us)
  • Heat resistant: melts from 165°C
  • Resistant to acids and bases
  • Various colors, mainly known as orange twisted rope or white packing rope

Applications

  • All-round use

Layout

  • Pre-packaged strands
  • Bobbins
  • Rolls
  • Balls (packing twine)
