Polyamide or nylon

Polyamide or nylon was the first material used for synthetic ropes.

It involves a chain of amide-type monomers made from benzene, which is pressed into pellets after a specific production process. These pellets are melted and extruded, creating filaments or fibers (melt spinning).

The fibres are then spun into yarn and further processed into a finished rope product.

Properties

  • Synthetic rope, non-biodegradable
  • Strong and durable
  • Flexible and soft rope, but becomes harder in water
  • Easy to tie

Technical specifications

  • (Usually 16-strand) braided or 3- or 4-strand twisted rope
  • Synthetic rope with the highest breaking strength and abrasion resistance
  • Shock absorbing, high stretch (± 20%)
  • Moisture resistance: absorbs water and sinks (density 1.14 g/cm³), rot-resistant but loses 10 to 15% of its breaking strength when wet. Breaking strength recovers when the rope dries.
  • UV resistant
  • Heat resistant: melts from 215°C
  • Not resistant to acids, but resistant to bases
  • Colour: white, some references also in fluorescent yellow and black

Applications

  • Masonry
  • Flooring cord
  • Pulling loads/cables
  • Roller shutter cord
  • Tents and flagpoles
